“I've worked as a graphic designer for many years: from publishing to corporate design. Several years of freelancing made room for additional illustration projects. And I continue to explore the fine arts I enjoyed in college: printmaking, watercolor, and an occasional foray into something new like a recent sculpture involving tree branches--like a tree planted by the waters...”

Karen's comments on working with Melea:

“I met Melea on the road to Emmaus. Melea had written a church production for which she needed a postcard. A mutual friend introduced us, and we've been working together since--somewhere near twenty years now.

“Melea has been a joy to work with: she can visualize a rough scribble, and frees me to be creative with the images that her stories create in my mind's eye. We began with cassette covers, and have progressed with changes in media to CD's and illustrated books.”

The recent sculpture Aurum was on exhibit at Pasadena Community College on July 2008.

“Aurum” is the elemental name for gold that's been cleared of dross (I think! That was the intent anyway.) One of my journal drawings from a retreat in 2005 was hand-titled "Refined by Fire." Aurum is the combination of the idea of growth following pain, and that of being "rooted by the water." I have given Aurum distinct feminine qualities.
